I got a phone call in the afternoon 2 weeks ago. I didn't know the number so I let it go straight to voicemail. The message said "Hi my name is Vivian, I got your name from Pam your family friend. She said that she has the best baker and gave me your number. I would love to order a wedding cake. Our wedding is in 2 weeks. Please contact me." Well after thinking "who orders a cake 2 weeks before the wedding?" I decided to call her back. After many missed calls and messages I finally met up with the couple. Expecting a young couple I was suprised when an 60 + couple answered the door. Being both there 2nd marriage they decided to only have cake, punch, coffee and tea. So no pressure at all! They didn't want anything fancy. Well I started with my normal questions, Where did you meet, how long have you been dating, all the fun stuff i get to learn. They have know each other for many years and met at church. while chatting about wedding related items the phone rang. Vivian answered the phone and left the room. John informed me that He had been fighting cancer for the last 9 months. He's been on cemo and radiation since the begining. The doctors told him that he has cancer in his brain and lungs. They gave him 2 months to live. What was 9 months ago and he's still alive and active. Probily the most active older man i know. He bikes from University Place to Puyallup ever day to work. Hasn't missed a day in over 35 years Rain or shine. He said that all of his tumors has shrunk to almost nothing and that he hasn't told Vivian yet because he was going to tell her on there wedding days during his vows. What a wonderful secret to keep! He loves Vivian so much you can just tell by the way he looks at her.
Once Vivian was back in the conversation we started to talk about cake. With 165 people I decided on 3 tiers. They decided on Chocolate with ganache filling, vanilla with fresh strawberries, and lemon with fresh raspberries. She also needs a gluten free cake for her daughter. All frosted with cream chesse frosting and decorated with all different designs.
Here is the wonderful email I received today from the bride:
ReplyDeleteDear Cortney,
My dear, your cake was the hit of the reception. There was not one crumb
left of the regular cake and Mary had to steal her gluten free cake from
some lickers and grabbers. We each got a piece of the vanilla with
strawberry filling. They were the last 2 pieces left. No one had thought
to save us a taste of the other two layers and we were so busy greeting
people we forgot. So, now we will have to have cakes made for future
occasions to try the chocolate and the lemon poppy seed. Everyone just
raved. If you had had business cards there, they would have been snatched
up. It was the best cake i have ever had. And the most beautiful. I
saved the flowers from the cake and they are floating in crystal bowls
aound the house. Thank you so much for your marvelous talent and skill.
Thank you for delivering the cake and for the attention made to the set
up. It was truly a work of art. I wish I had had more,(Piggy that I am).
Pam was correct. You are the best!
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Vivian Ellingson opps Severson
